Broadly Speaking group within NUT calls for greater collaboration and unity within teaching profession

In the TES (29/3/13), former NUT General Secretary, Fred Jarvis, expounded on why it has never been more important for teacher unions to unite whilst pointing out that he first publicly called for this in 1989. Sadly for the profession the call was not capitalised on at that time and now, more than twenty years later, we are not much nearer achieving professional unity than we were then.

Professional Unity is the only way to defend the educational profession against the current threats to education and teachers. The evidence is that countries where teaching unions have a stronger voice on education policy and reform find that it strengthens the education system as it has done in Finland which has one union and is consistently the best performing country as measured by OECD.
